The holiday season is a great time to give of yourself to others less fortunate or just in need of a holiday pick me up. So, I put together this list of ten great charities that you may want to help out and support to spread a little cheer this holiday season!
1. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Charity
Donations to The Salvation Army help provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need. Financial assistance also helps with basic necessities, along with seasonal aid. Families of prisoners often are included. Volunteers for The Salvation Army distribute gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes, and shelters are open for sit-down dinners. The Salvation Army endeavors to bring spiritual light and love to those it serves at Christmas so that the real meaning of the season is not forgotten.
Trees for Troops, a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, provides farm-grown Christmas Trees to armed forces members and their families in the U.S. and stationed overseas. Through cash contributions, donated Christmas Trees, the work of many volunteers, and the generous support of our shipping sponsor FedEx, Trees for Troops has brought the true spirit of Christmas to thousands of deserving service men and women and their families.
The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas:
1)Disaster Relief (like Hurricane Sandy victims picking up the pieces along the East Coast!)
2) Supporting America’s Military Families
4) Health and Safety Services
5) International Services
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community. Toys for Tots delivers toys along with a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.
The ASPCA’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. The ASPCA works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters nationwide.
Operation Shower is about celebrating and honoring military families by providing joyful baby showers for families who are expecting a new baby and are experiencing or have recently experienced deployment.
New York Cares was founded by a group of friends who wanted to take action against serious social issues that faced NYC in the late 1980s. Finding few options to help, they created their own organization to address the problems from the ground up. New York Cares is now the city’s largest volunteer organization, running volunteer programs for 1,300 nonprofits, city agencies, and public schools.
DonationTown.org began as a way to help charities get more donations. Plain and simple. It all started from an inspiration to create a website that would encourage people to donate to charity. Particularly, non-cash items, like clothing and household goods. DonationTown.org has become the best website for people to connect with charities and schedule a donation pick up.
Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish® experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.
10. Angel Tree
An Angel Tree Christmas connects incarcerated parents with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts. Your support makes it possible for local churches to deliver gifts and the Gospel to children in the name of their incarcerated parent.
