My Guide to Mixing It Up With Holiday Decor

Hey Ya’ll,

Every year I get to work with one of my favorite clients to decorate their house for the holidays. Although if I’m being honest, this is one of those jobs that doesn’t seem like a job at all… It’s more like a fabulous tree trimming party. For the past six years I have been decorating their house and since then, they have had three beautiful children, we have celebrated milestone birthdays together and built a friendship that extends way beyond my decorating duties. So the decorating day is full of fun, eating, more eating and celebrating the holidays!

With that introduction, I thought it would be fun to show the results of my decorating transformation since we decided to completely redesign their tree and the decor in their house this year. We went with a more whimsical look of red, lime green and white rather than the more traditional gold and silver we have done for the past few years.

Whenever I decorate a house, a party or any space, I have one simple rule: mix the inexpensive decor with the more expensive and the results will be priceless!

With that said, I started at the 99 Cent Store and bought anything and everything in the chosen color pallet that I could use as filler or as a base to build on. After stocking up on the discount merchandise, I went to Micheal’s Arts and Crafts where everything was on sale from 40% – 60% off! There, I was able to purchase the majority of what I needed, and with everything on sale, I totally went to town and knew that I was going to be creating one amazing tree. Lastly, I hit the higher end stores where I was able to pick up the one of a kind pieces that were needed to really bring out the flavor of the discount store items and create a magical holiday for my dear friends! After the shopping was done, it was time to decorate…

I hope you enjoyed seeing the before photos of the piles of decor (all mixed together from all the various stores) and then the final result, which I think will create an truly extraordinary holiday experience for my friends! Feel free to post a photo of your holiday home decor in the comment section below. I can’t wait to see your beautiful work!

  1. Dollar stores, craft stores & ribbon are so under-estimated, you’re a tree genius! One year i did a tree just in old-fashion candy, big colorful lollipops & ribbon. i think i need to do that again, it’s still my favorite.
