Haunt Your House: Party Decorations Phase 1

Hey Ya’ll,

Regardless of size or theme, decorating for any party can be a daunting (and expensive!) task. For this reason, many people end up putting it off until the last minute.

This year, I urge you not to be one of those people. As soon as you have your theme nailed down, your next step should be deciding where your party is taking place and how much of that space you plan on decorating.

Here are a few fun ideas for different spaces and party locations to consider:

  • Home Library/Study/Formal Dining Room
  • Garage
  • Backyard
  • Barn/Shed
  • Empty Pool
  • Rooftop Garden
  • Basement
  • Attic
  • Rented Abandon Warehouse

Next, with your decorating budget in mind, draft a list of items needed to establish your party’s theme in your chosen space. From this list, determine which items you’ll have to buy (both high-end and 99-cent store purchases) or rent, and which items you can make yourself. Remember, there are many low-cost items that you can use to create your own decorations.

To get your creative wheels spinning, make a list of the different ways you might use the following items to decorate:

  • Gauze
  • Cheesecloth
  • Cotton balls
  • Plastic spiders
  • Twigs and tree branches
  • Mason jars
  • Milk jugs
  • Tea Lights and candles
  • Candy corn, black licorice
  • Paper Bags
  • Stickers/decals
  • Balloons in orange, black, purple and green
  • Construction paper rats, bats, witch hats, skulls, and jack-o-lantern faces, etc.
  • Tissue paper in orange, black, purple, green, and white
  • Yarn
  • Spray paint/acrylic craft paint
  • Pumpkins & gourds in orange and white
  • White sheets
  • Newspapers (soak them in coffee for an aged look!)
  • Old/used books (remove book jackets and write your own spooky titles)

Tip: Black plastic tarps can be a great decorating tool! It comes in sheets that are 100′ long, so it covers a lot of space, hides things and makes for a totally different atmosphere.

Let me know if any of these cheap items inspire a chic decorating idea for your party in the comment section below.

Stay tuned for my next post dedicated to phase two of decorating for your extraordinary Halloween experience!
