While running on the treadmill at the gym recently, I saw an interesting episode of the Today Show. They were doing a taste test involving the battle of boxed wine vs. bottled wine. Hota Kotb and guest co-host Kris Jenner put their taste buds to the test along with Food & Wine magazine’s Ray Isle, to see if there is a difference in the taste of boxed wine or the bottle!
This was a very interesting segment because about half the time they thought that the boxed grapes were better than that bottle, so it got me thinking even further. When I was a kid, boxed wine didn’t get a very good rap and I think that still holds true today. There are plenty of wine snobs out there that I suspect would never, ever drink from a box, so I think that this would be a fun party to throw some night with a bunch of friends and do a little wine tasting. Invite the wine snobs, the wine enthusiast and the people who just enjoy a glass of wine on occasion and see what grape wins!
I am that person that knows nothing about wine. To me, it either taste good or it doesn’t. Sometimes I can taste the grapefruit or the plum or a hint of chocolate as I swirl my glass trying to look like I know what I am doing and checking out the “LEGS” as the wine slides
down the glass, but mostly, I buy wine based on the label. I am a visual person, so a cool or interesting label is all I need.
Anyway, my question to everyone is: What’s better? The box or the bottle? If the box wins, is it okay to bring a box of wine to a party as a host gift? Screw top wine bottles recently became acceptable, so how long will it take for the box to make its way back into the refrigerator? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
I am headed to the wine festival this weekend in Solvang, it is a tradition with my group of friends every October so I am going to do a little research and see if anyone is pouring their “tastes” from a box. No doubt this weekend will be fun and we will create extraordinary experiences.
